Local History of Federation Region in New South Wales, Australia

The Federation region, located in southern New South Wales, Australia, is a beautiful area steeped in history. The region has a rich Indigenous history, with the Wiradjuri people having lived here for thousands of years prior to European settlement.

European Settlement

The first Europeans arrived in the Federation region in the early 1800s. They were mainly farmers and graziers who were attracted to the fertile land and abundant water resources. Towns such as Corowa, Howlong, Mulwala, Balldale, and Urana were established to support these agricultural communities.

The Federation Movement

The name "Federation" comes from the movement for the Australian colonies to federate and become one nation. The Federation movement gained momentum in the late 1800s and early 1900s, with conventions being held across the country to discuss the idea.

One of the most significant events in the Federation movement occurred in the Federation region. In 1893, the Corowa Conference was held in Corowa, bringing together delegates from across the country to discuss the idea of federation. The conference led to the formation of the Australian Federation League, which campaigned for federation and played a key role in the writing of the Australian Constitution in 1901.

World War I

During World War I, many men from the Federation region enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force to fight for their country. In total, around 1,500 men from the region served in the war. Many did not return home, and their sacrifice is commemorated in memorials across the region.

Post-War Era

Following World War I, the Federation region experienced significant growth and development. The construction of the Hume Dam in the 1930s brought new irrigation opportunities to the area, leading to increased agricultural production and a boost to the local economy.

During World War II, the region played an important role in the war effort. The Mulwala Explosives Factory was established in 1942 to produce explosives for the war, and it remains a significant employer in the region today.

The Modern Era

Today, the Federation region is a thriving community with a diverse economy. Agriculture remains an important industry, but the region also has a growing tourism sector, with visitors attracted to the natural beauty of the Murray River and the surrounding forests.

The Federation region is also home to a vibrant arts community, with many artists and writers choosing to live here for the inspiration provided by the natural surroundings and the region's rich cultural heritage.
